DEDICATION OF THE MASSAPEQUA PRESERVE IN MEMORY OF FORMER NASSAU COUNTY PRESIDING OFFICER PETER J. SCHMITT

(Mineola, NY)   Nassau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell joined County Executive Edward Mangano and other area officials in honoring the legacy of Peter Schmitt.  The Schmitt family along with members of the Massapequa Association of Girl Scouts and the Massapequa Historical Society celebrated the renaming of Nassau County’s 423-acre Massapequa Preserve in honor of the longtime Nassau County Legislator.  Legislator Schmitt who represented the 12th legislative district in Nassau County, which included Massapequa, Massapequa Park and North Massapequa was an ardent environmental advocate of the Preserve.  He worked for more than a decade to nurture the preserve and helped obtain $8 million in state and county funds to improve it.  The renaming of the Preserve was a moving tribute to Legislator Schmitt and all he has done for the Massapequa community.
