Free Classes For Seniors And Veterans Will Provide Tips On
How To Keep Your Balance And Avoid Dangerous Falls

Winthrop-University Hospital and Nassau Comptroller George Maragos Team Up to Keep Seniors on their Feet

Mineola, NY- On Monday, October 28th, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Winthrop University Hospital presented the first in a series of free classes for seniors on improving balance to prevent falls.  The event drew dozens of attendees for an enjoyable and informative session.

Falls are the leading cause of injuries among seniors, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.  One in three adults over the age of 65 will fall over the course of a year, with consequences such as reduced independence, reduced mobility, and fear of falling.  However, many falls are preventable.  With this in mind, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Winthrop University Hospital collaborated to present classes for seniors on improving one’s balance.  Four classes in this popular free series remain and begin at 11 am sharp on the dates listed below:
-“Move with the Music” on Monday, November 4
-“Be Prepared” on Monday, November 18
-“Move with the Music” on Monday, December 2
-“Be Prepared” on Monday, December 16

To reserve a spot in one of these free classes, call (516) 571-2386.

Fall injuries can be devastating to the individuals who experience them and are unnecessarily common.  The CDC reports that in 2010, 2.3 million seniors were treated for nonfatal injuries in emergency rooms, leading to 662,000 hospitalizations.  The direct medical costs of these falls, adjusted for inflation, amounted to $30 billion.  Help us prevent falls in our community, encourage the older adults in your life to register for a class.
