Nassau County Police Dog Was Injured During Heroin Arrest

Mangano Honors K-9 MaverickMineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano recently honored Nassau County Police Department K-9 member Maverick, who was injured during a heroin arrest in Hempstead on March 18.

Maverick, an 8-year old German Shepherd, was injured during an investigation as part of Operation H.A.L.T. (Heroin Abuse Location and Targeting). When officers attempted to arrest a suspect for sale and possession of heroin, the suspect attempted to flee and Maverick was sent by his handler, Police Officer Michael LaSala, to chase the suspect. A 5-year old Akita then ran across the street and attacked Maverick, who was forced to defend himself. He was bitten on his right side during the fight, but was back to work in the Nassau County Police Department’s K-9 Unit after veterinarians declared him to be in good health.

“Maverick’s bravery proves that not all heroes are humans,” said County Executive Mangano. “He has played an important role in keeping guns and drugs off the streets, as well as serving as a trusted partner to Officer LaSala. All of our Nassau County Police Officers, including the four-legged ones, are to be commended for their service.”

During his six years with the Nassau County Police Department, Maverick has been involved in 24 apprehensions, including the 2007 arrest of a shooting suspect in an attempted murder. In total, Maverick has recovered $233,000 in narcotics proceeds, 6 loaded guns 328 pounds of marijuana and more than 10 kilos of cocaine.
