Mangano Reopens Stannards Brook County Park

Massive Beautification Project in Port Washington Now Complete

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano is happy to announce that Stannards Brook County Park in Port Washington, which underwent a massive improvement and beautification project over the last two years, is now reopened for residents to enjoy.

“The improvements the County has made to Stannards Brook County Park have created one of the most beautiful parks you will find in the region,” said County Executive Mangano. “Working with the community and other municipalities, we have preserved and improved a true Nassau County treasure.”

Stannards Brook County Park is a 2.3-acre passive park located in the unincorporated area of Port Washington that consists of a stream, wooded areas, open lawns and walkways. Community concerns over drainage and aesthetic conditions within the park prompted the Port Washington Parks Conservancy to formulate a Master Plan for the Park.

The 2004 Environmental Bond Act awarded $440,000 for installation of many of the recommended solutions detailed in the Master Plan. The Friends of Stannard’s Brook also received a $400,000 EPF grant as a match to the EBA award and $50,000 from the Town of North Hempstead. DeBruin Engineering and RGR Landscaping was retained by the Department of Public Works to develop a Technical Design Report (TDR) and detailed plans and specifications for bidding the project.

Improvements completed at Stannards Brook Park include:

  • Modifications to the stream and culvert system to alleviate the serious flooding conditions that have occurred in the past
  • Improvements to wooded areas through the removal of invasive plants, and planting of many native grasses, shrubs and trees
  • Improvements to open areas by creating attractive planting areas
  • Improvements to park entrance areas, walkways and bridges
  • New benches and trash receptacles

“Walking through this preserve will transport visitors to a time when Nassau County was still in its natural state,” said County Executive Mangano. “I will continue to preserve and improve our parklands for not just us, but for future generations. Stannards Brook is a shining example of that effort, and I want to thank all who were involved in making this possible for every Nassau County resident.”
