Mangano & King To Host “Active Shooter” Briefing For Religious Leaders As Jewish High Holidays Approach

On September 10th, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano will join with United States Congressman Peter T. King, and InfraGard – a public-private partnership with the FBI, to host an important briefing regarding best practices in dealing with “Active Shooters” or other security incidents in places of worship and public facilities. An active shooter is defined as an armed person who has used deadly physical force on other persons and continues to do so while having unrestricted access to additional victims.

“In this day and age we must be prepared to detect and fight both foreign and domestic terrorism. As the Jewish high holidays approach, Nassau Police are on a heighten security protocol. In order to increase preparedness, I have launched an active shooter training seminar so religious leaders andschool administrators are prepared to respond should they be confronted with an active shooter situation,” stated County Executive Mangano.

“Intelligence, state-of-the-art technology and expert policing are essential to safeguarding our committees and houses of worship,” added Congressman King.

This forum comes on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, and includes presentations by the Nassau County Police Department’s intelligence and counter-terrorism teams; and the Department of Homeland Security, and will include critical need-to-know information for religious leaders and others working in religious institutions. The event aims to educate people about preventing, deterring and responding to such incidents, and will include a question and answer period, moderated by State Assemblyman David McDonough (Chairman of the Assembly Minority Task Force on Public Safety.) The goal is to ensure that the County’s protocols are coordinated so that they collectively provide the best outcome for public safety.

Due to the sensitive nature of this briefing, MEDIA is invited to cover justthe Keynote speeches by County Executive Mangano and Congressman King and will then have the opportunity to interview the elected officials in an adjacent room.
