Abrahams Urges Residents to Protect Themselves from Internet Danger
by Using New Government Website

Mineola, NY – Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead), has joined with New York State Senator Charles Schumer in urging residents to visit a new website aimed at keeping our communities and our personal information safe. In an effort to protect consumers and businesses, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently developed a website, www.ftc.gov/infosecurity, to help individuals and organizations safeguard their personal information. The website is updated regularly and provide pertinent information useful to all computer users, from children to business people.

“The internet can be utilized as a magnificent tool for educational and business purposes; however, it can also be dangerous tool when utilized by a hacker or cyber terrorist”, stated Legislator Abrahams. “It is extremely important for everyone to take preventative measures in shielding their personal information by only permitting authorized trafficking through their computer port.”

This protective site is easily accessed and includes important tips such as:

  • Always use anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date. By updating your anti-virus software, you are not only protecting yourself, but others you communicate with.
  • Always use a firewall. While many computer operating systems already have firewall “internet locks” installed, there are other available to buy or download that will help secure the computer.
  • Be aware of what you share. Never share files with anyone you do not know or trust using peer-to-peer software, your e-mail program or a Wi-Fi transmitter. You may be exposed to danger.
  • Use unique passwords and don’t share them with anyone. Make sure your passwords have both numbers and letters and are at least eight characters long.
  • Be in control of your software and use tools to enhance protection. Download and update operating systems with the latest security patches and find firewall and anti virus tools that can help protect you.

During the holiday season, identity theft and fraud run rampant which is why everyone must take efforts to protect themselves. Within the past year alone, the FTC approximates that nearly 10 million Americans discovered that they were a victim of indentity theft. This website is just one of the many ways to protect your personal information

“All Nassau County employees already have installed firewalls to protect their personal and business information”, added Abrahams. “By paying close information and careful attention to the recommendations on the FTC website, everyone will have a better chance of not not falling victim to identity theft and the dangers resulting from computer hackers and terrorists.”
