Legislator Williams Recruits Seniors for Foster Grandparent Program

Nassau County Legislator Patrick Williams (D-Uniondale) is recruiting senior citizens over the age of 60 to participate in Nassau County's Foster Grandparent Program. The program, which is coordinated by the Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, puts "foster grandparents" into communities as volunteers in elementary schools, head start programs, day care centers and mentoring/tutoring programs.

"The Foster Grandparents Program is a great way to expose our children to the knowledge and wisdom of our senior community," said Legislator Williams. "I would encourage any senior who has an interest to take advantage of this opportunity."

Seniors who are age 60+, and are income eligible, receive a nontaxable stipend of $2.25 per hour, transportation reimbursement and supplementary insurance in exchange for 20 hours of service per week. The Foster Grandparent stipend is not considered wages and does not reduce eligibility for public assistance, food stamps, SSI, subsidizing housing or services of any governmental programs. Income eligibility for a family of one is $11,600; a family of two is $15,750.

To learn more about this program or to receive an application call the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs at 572-0800.
