"Preventive Measures Still Best Weapon Against West Nile Virus Threat"
says Legislator Becker

Nassau County residents are once again being asked to assist in the fight against West Nile Virus by eliminating as many potential mosquito breeding sites on their home properties as possible.

"For the past two years, our residents have played a major role in reducing the mosquito population," said Legislator Francis X. Becker, "and I'm urging them to do the same this year by taking the following actions:"

  • Empty standing water in any containers
  • Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, potted plant dishes, etc. At least once a week, if not more often
  • Completely drain swimming pools or keep them properly maintained and circulating; empty any water that may accumulate on swimming pool covers
  • Clean and unclog rain gutters
  • Make sure window and door screens are installed, tight and in good repair
  • Replace outdoor lights with yellow bug lights
