"DO NOT CALL" TELEMARKETING REGISTRY NOW AVAILABLE

County Legislator Vincent Muscarella (R-West Hempstead) is urging residents to take advantage of a "Do Not Call Telemarketing Registry" that is now available to residents due to legislation recently signed by Governor George Pataki. The registry was created to prevent unwanted, high-pressure telemarketing calls.

"Residents interested in signing up for the Consumer Protection Board registry can call 1-800-NYS-1220 or visit the Board's web site at: www.consumer.state.ny.us to place their phone number on the list," said Legislator Becker. The registry does not officially open until April 1, 2001.

Under the new law, it will be illegal for telemarketers to call you once your name appears on the registry. Telemarketers who violate the law could be subject to a fine of up to $2,000 per call.

"This registry not only protects the consumer, it protects those legitimate businesses that employ ethical telemarketing practices. I urge residents to take advantage of this important public service," concluded Legislator Muscarella.
