Legislator Gonsalves Supports New Open Space Legislation

Legislator Norma L. Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) is very pleased to support legislation that will create an open space fund for Nassau County. The bill, first proposed by Legislator Gonsalves in 2002 will allow Nassau County to preserve the few remaining acres of natural land for residents to enjoy long into the future. This legislation will require that 5% of the proceeds from the sale of Nassau County land be placed in a fund designed specifically for purchasing open space. The fund will also be used to rehabilitate and maintain land for future open space projects. "This piece of legislation is a wonderful legacy that this Legislature can leave for our children. It is going to protect what little open space we have left," said Legislator Gonsalves.

With the creation of this fund, Nassau County will be able to purchase land for cultural, environmental, historic, and recreational purposes. The Open Space and Parks Advisory Committee will explore Nassau County for sites that will be considered for purchase. "I would like to thank all of my colleagues on the Legislature for their efforts in making this dream a reality. I am extremely pleased to see all the hard work that went into this project come to fruition with the creation of this fund," added Legislator Gonsalves. The bill is expected to pass with bipartisan support at the next Legislative meeting on April 28, 2003.
