Legislator Dunne Passes Legislation
Expanding Senior Citizen Tax Exemption Program

County Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr. (R-Levittown) has introduced and passed local legislation, authorized by State law, which expands the senior citizen real property tax exemption. The legislation, which was adopted unanimously, awaits the County Executive's signature.

"I am pleased to have co-sponsored and passed this important legislation to expand the senior citizen real property tax exemption to the furthest extent possible as authorized by State law. This legislation helps our older Americans who have helped build our communities remain in their homes," said Legislator Dunne. The program is administered by the Nassau County Department of Assessment.

The proposed income limits and percentage exempt from taxation are as follows:

Up to and including $20,500 50%
More than $20,500 but less than $21,500 45%
More than $21,500 but less than $22,500 40%
More than $22,500 but less than $23,500 35%
More than $23,500 but less than $24,500 30%
More than $24,500 but less than $25,300 25%
More than $25,300 but less than $26,200 20%
More than $26,200 but less than $27,100 15%
More than $27,100 but less than $28,100 10%
More than $28,100 but less than $28,900 5%

To be eligible to participate in the program one of the homeowners must be 65 years of age and meet the income limits prescribed by State law. The legislation provides that any income shall be offset by all medical and prescription drug expenses actually paid which were not reimbursed or paid for by insurance. The filing period for the exemption is September 1 through December 31.
