Jacobs succeeds in restoring funds to Youth Services
Return vital services to human service programs and bus

Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) and fellow Democrats were successful during recent negotiations with the County Executive to assure that $3.6 million was restored to the County's Youth Services, including such programs as youth development; mentoring; violence prevention; teen pregnancy prevention; and organized after school activities and summer programs. The restorations were made by cutting government waste and not through an increase in taxes, Jacobs said.

The restorations include an agreement to make no service cuts to Long Island Bus for 2000 or 2001; to restore $1.1 million to social service programs for the remainder of year and $2.5 million for 2001; and to preserve the day care salary enhancement program. The restoration and preservation of several important programs was achieved, as part of negotiations to reach the first level of County actions required by the State's $105 million NIFA bailout plan.

"We have succeeded in fulfilling a promise made back in January to make progress in restoring and protecting services, while demanding governmental efficiencies and reductions in wasteful county spending," said Legislator Jacobs. The County Executive made the devastating reductions to the agencies in his Fiscal Year 2000 budget back in December, when he announced a 50 percent reduction in "discretionary" contracts.

Legislator Jacobs has been vigilant in fighting for the restoration of the cuts, which included services, and programs offered by many of the youth agencies in the 16th district, such as the Hicksville Teen-Age Council.

"As elected officials representing the people, we could not stand by and watch the budget deficit balanced on the backs of the County's most needy," Jacobs said.
