Jacobs approves $200,000 for Tobacco Control program

Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) and Majority Democrats on September 29 approved $200,000 for a Tobacco Control program to provide educational and counter-marketing intervention for tobacco control directed to low-income pregnant women.

The Legislature also approved the renaming of a section of Jerusalem Ave. between Smith Street and Liberty Street, as "Kryston Batson Memorial Way" in memory of Kryston Batson who was hit by and car and killed in front of Turtle Hook Middle School in Uniondale.

The following supplemental appropriations were also approved:

  • $50,275 for a water quality-monitoring program that allows for beach water quality monitoring at all beaches and provides public notification of beach closures and openings.
  • $200,000 for a Foster Grandparents program to provide opportunities for low-income persons aged 60 years and over to provide person-to-person services to children with special needs.
  • $122,500 for an Out of School Program to provide youth development, educational, mediation and conflict resolution services intended to reduce delinquent behavior.
  • $46,500 in Community College Grants to support the coordination of intercollegiate programs.
  • $421,659 Grant fund to the Health Department (Bioterrorism Response).
  • $295,755 Grant fund to Veterans Services (Homeless Vets).

The legislature also approved applications for grant awards for the following programs: to provide English As A Second Language and Computer Skills classes to adult immigrant (primarily but not exclusively Latino/a) population of Nassau County who participate in Nassau County C.A.S.A.'s Adult Education Program; and to the New York State Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in the amount of $11,632, which is 100%, funded by New York State.

The appointment by the County Executive of John E. Puckhaber as a member of the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency was approved and a request to the State Legislature to amend the Civil Service Law in relation to reduction of positions based upon seniority with an employer in the Nassau County Police Department also received approval.

The legislature approved payment of several settlements and judgments against the county in the amount of $2,467,500.
