Dems oppose cuts to day care enhancement salaries

Majority Democrats voiced their opposition today to a recent announcement by County Executive Thomas Gulotta to cut $2.3 million in salary enhancements to daycare professionals.

The day care salary enhancement program allows child care technicians to receive stipends that pay for quality day care programs and permit working parents to leave their children with competent professionals.

"This cut goes right to the heart of the very people we should hold in the highest esteem, the professionals who care for our children," said Legislator Joseph Scannell (D-Baldwin). "They must be given the opportunity to make a livable wage and the salary enhancements for daycare workers allows this County to attract the best and brightest to this important profession."

Several weeks ago dozens of day care workers and children rallied at the County Executive and Legislative Building at One West Street to protest the proposed cuts.
