Legislator Jacobs Urges Residents To Take A Diabetes Test To Know If They Are At Risk

Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) urges residents to join the American Diabetes Alert Day – a nationwide public awareness campaign created to identify millions of Americans who are unaware they have diabetes.

“I don’t think people know that nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes,” Legislator Jacobs said. “And so many more people are at-risk of getting it because they are overweight, don’t exercise and are 45 or older. I urge residents to take a few minutes and participate in American Diabetes Alert Day.”

People can take a free simple written test on Tuesday, March 24 to assess their risk for diabetes by calling the American Diabetes Association at 1-800-DIABETES (342-2383) or visiting www.diabetes.org/risktest.

If left untreated, diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, amputations, blindness and even death.
