Congress Introduces Bill to Fight Veteran Unemployment

The proposed Veteran Employment Act bill of 2010 is aimed at addressing the 17.9% unemployment rate facing returning Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans (according to the Labor Department). Apparently, thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans have come home to find their military training of little value in today's civilian economy. The bill has yet to be voted on.

VA Secretary Announces New Hotline for Homeless Veterans

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki has established a new telephone hotline to provide emergency support and resources to homeless Veterans in upstate New York with the VA Medical Center in Canandaigua. Family members, workers at community agencies and non-VA providers also may call to find out about the many programs and services available. United Way’s Mobile Free Dental Program


The van will operate six days a week, providing a full range of dental services to needy residents in Hempstead, Central Islip, Bay Shore, Brentwood and Riverhead. The van will make twice-a-week visits (Tuesdays and Thursdays) to the Family Service League’s Iovino South Shore Family Center in Bay Shore, the site of today’s announcement, and the Hagedorn Community Center in Hempstead on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Veteran Service Agency Calendar

The “Moving Vietnam Wall” was on display from June 10 –June 14 at Greis Park in Lynbrook. The “Moving Wall" is the half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., which had been touring the country for more than twenty years. "The Wall" shared the experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington.
