GREEN COMMUTES MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

If just one in ten commuters in the NY/Long Island metro area carpooled, worked from home or used public transit just once a week, emissions of ozone precursors would be reduced by about 5,100 tons each week - the equivalent of 2,600 SUVs. That's why the Nassau County Government is partnering with Long Island Transportation Management through their Commuter Choice Program and Clean Air NY, an initiative sponsored by the New York State Department of Transportation in support of region-wide air quality efforts.

WHAT NASSAU COUNTY EMPLOYEES* ARE SAYING ABOUT GREEN COMMUTES:

“What a difference the train makes!  I live close to the Oyster Bay Line and I work at 1 West Street.  I used to commute by car and it took me about 35-40 minutes to get to work.  The fuel prices made me explore cheaper ways to get to work.  My train commute is now just over 20 minutes and costs about $2.00 each way! I now get to relax, have my coffee and read my paper…and save money, too!”  - Steve

“The peak traffic and the gas prices were killing me.  I started taking the train and I now arrive at work in Mineola more relaxed and with a few extra bucks in my pocket!  Now when I see the drivers stuck in traffic from the train window, I feel bad for them.” - Martin

“Even though Hicksville is pretty close, I still take the train from there because it’s cheaper than gas, is less time than driving, and on those bad weather days, it’s so much easier.”  - Mark

“I take the bus from Freeport to work.  It’s usually reliable and it costs only about two bucks.  Now where are you going to find gas prices THAT low?”  - Donna

“I was spending about $20-25 per day driving to work.  Now I take the train and it costs me less than $10 per day with the TransitChek Program!  The train gives you a better quality of life for sure…I get to close my eyes, read, and save time on my commute, too!”  - Sara

“My reverse commute on the train is a no-brainer.  My monthly ticket costs are half the cost of gas and there are quite a few trains to choose from.  Also, have you seen the roads on those rainy and snowy days? What a nightmare!”  - Bob
