Abrahams & legislature approve Nassau Community College budget & new fitness equipment for Aquatic Center
Nassau County Legislator Kevan
Abrahams (D-Hempstead) and majority members approved the 2004-2005 budget
for Nassau Community College at a recent session of the legislature. The
$1.63 Million budget received bipartisan support. The budget includes a
$250 tuition increase for the 2004-05 academic year.
The legislature also approved $40,000 in fitness equipment for the fitness center at the Nassau
County Aquatic Center.
Lawmakers also approved the following supplemental appropriations:
- $1,100,088 in funds from Health Research, Inc. coming
from the Center for Disease Control for the Public Health Preparedness/Response
for Bioterrorism grant. The purpose of this grant is to provide funds for
the development of local public health infrastructure and emergency response
and preparedness plans for local Health Departments. No County match is
required.
- $975, 290 for the Nassau County Police Department to be received
from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Domestic Preparedness
through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services according
to the following departments: Emergency Management, Fire Commission, Medical
Commission, Police Department, Correctional Center, Department of Public
Works.
- •$50,000 for Youth Board (Local Law Enforcement Block Grant). This
item appropriates $50,000 in funds from the Nassau County Police Dept. for
the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant. The purpose of this grant is to work
with approximately 10-15 youths to implement a peer education program in
Hempstead and surrounding communities focused on gang and violence prevention
intervention. No county match is required, because these monies are federal
pass through funds and have been allocated for expenditures by the Nassau
County Youth Board and the Uniondale Community Council Youth Project.
- $53,368 in funds for Senior Citizen Affairs (Title IIIB Support Services Grant)
from the NYS office for the Aging for the Title IIIB Support Services Grant.
The purpose of this grant is to strengthen and develop a system of coordinated
and comprehensive services for older persons, particularly low-income, minority,
handicapped, and isolated persons, which will enable them to remain in their
homes as long as possible. There is no sunset to this grant.
In other business,
the legislature also approved:
- the appointment by the County Executive
of Stephen Richard Mahler to the Assessment Review Commission.
- a $1,584,000 bonding ordinance to finance settlements for various judgments against the
county.
- a resolution naming the area known as the Hempstead Plains the
“Francis T. Purcell Preserve at the Hempstead Plains.”

of the legislature will take place on Monday, September 13th at 2 p.m.
