Abrahams announces Museum's Celebration of African American History Month
Mineola, NY-Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead), together with County Executive Thomas Suozzi, announce an extensive schedule of programs, lectures and panel discussion at the African American Museum, presented in February in observance of African American History Month.
The program will highlight the history and culture of African American and are planned for every Sunday and Wednesday throughout the month of February. The schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, February 5
"Tracing Your Roots", Julius and Joysetta Pearse, Founders, African Atlantic Genealogical Society
Sunday, February 9
"African Origin of Hip Hop"
Recording Artists Atiba Kwabena-Wilson
Traditional African rhythms and beats and their influence and impact on spiritual, gospel, blues. Jazz, R&B, rap and present-day hip hop sound. Discussion will include musical interludes illustrating the various sounds. Light refreshments will be served.

"Blacks in the Military"
Dr. Leroy Ramsey, George Jones and Stanley Semple, noted military historians

Gallery Talk: "Angels of Deliverance"

"Blacks and the Law: From Emancipation to the Civil Rights Movement"
Panel Discussion
The Sunday programs will be held room 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Wednesday programs will be held room 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The month-long program is co-sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums, and The Friends of the African American Museum of Nassau County and the African Atlantic Genealogical Society.
Also at the Museum: "Angels of Deliverance: The Underground Railroad"-This highly regarded exhibit, on loan from the Queens Historical Society, chronicles the anti-slavery movement on Long Island from the early 1700's to the Civil War.
The African American Museum is located at 110 North Franklin Street in Hempstead. It is open Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4:45 p.m. For more information, call 516-572-0730.
