March 21, 2001 Williams approves distribution of sales tax funds
Mineola, NY - Members of the Nassau County Legislature cleared the way on Monday, March 19, for distribution of $250,000 in sales tax revenue to the County's 64 villages, following through on a pledge by the Democratic majority to give villages a share of the funds that towns and cities within the County have received for years. Based on population, some villages will receive a significant portion of the revenues while others will get only a few hundred dollars. However, Legislators said that including revenue sharing in the 2001 budget constituted a good faith down payment to create equity among municipal governments. Village officials have expressed appreciation for the effort. Members of the Democratic majority held a press conference in October 2000 and proposed that $250,000 in County's sales tax revenue be allocated for the villages. A local law establishing a local government assistance program for villages within Nassau County was adopted on December 20, 2000, and an ordinance which embodied the total amount allocated for distribution was heard in committee during the March 5 meeting. The final approval by the full legislature set the wheels in motion for distribution of the funds. "Sharing sales tax revenues with the villages was the only fair thing to do," said Legislator Patrick Williams (D-Uniondale) on behalf of the Democratic majority. "We are pleased that we were able to create a line in the budget that will ensure the villages will receive these funds in the future."
