Abrahams approves new health center for Freeport-Roosevelt
Other revitalization projects will include Biopartners Training Center in Lake Success and waterfront land purchase for Glen Cove

Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) and members of the Finance Committee this week approved a measure to obtain federal funding for a variety of revitalization projects throughout Nassau, including a new health center in the Freeport/Roosevelt area. The agreement is between the Nassau County Urban Consortium, the Office of Housing and Intergovernmental Affairs and the Department of Housing & Urban Development. HUD will guarantee loan funds to be used towards a Biopartners Training Center in Lake Success, a land purchase in Glen Cove to complete a waterfront revitalization project and the new health center.

Legislative approval was required before the County's OHIA could receive HUD authorization on the economic development projects. The projects include:

  • Freeport/Roosevelt Health Center ($3,250,000): This loan would fund the construction of a new community health care center. The Center will focus on women's and children's health issues in Freeport/Roosevelt, a medically underserved population. The center will be built on county-owned land and then transferred to a faith-based, not-for-profit group.
  • Biopartners Training Center ($1,500,000): Biopartners acts as an "incubator" for the local life sciences industry. The center would provide job training for entry level and higher jobs for the bioscience industry.
  • Glen Cove Waterfront Acquisitions ($1,250,000): This loan will fund the purchase of two of the last remaining parcels necessary to complete the city's waterfront revitalization. This project is on a brownfields site and currently is in a blighted area.

In other business, the full legislature approved an agreement with Saccardi & Schiff, in the amount of $250,000, to conduct a market study & housing needs assessment, provide assistance with CDBG and HOME eligibility documentation and compliance, prepare various area plans, including the Roosevelt Hamlet Revitalization plan, and provide other technical assistance related to community development and affordable housing plans and strategies.

The next legislative meeting will be on April 18 at 6 p.m.
