Dems call for quick resolution to ShOA contract

Recognizing the importance of reaching a timely agreement with members of the Sheriff's Officers' Association, Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs and the rest of her Democratic delegation called on County Executive Thomas Gulotta today to immediately begin renegotiating terms of an agreement between the county and representatives of ShOA. In addition, Presiding Officer Jacobs is asking the Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) to act as facilitator in the negotiations in an effort to expedite a contract agreement.

"We are prepared to participate in any appropriate manner to expedite an agreement between the county and members of the Sheriff's Officers' Association that addresses the concerns we have raised in the past. Upon completion of the negotiations we will consider any renegotiated contract deliberately and expeditiously," said Presiding Officer Jacobs.

While recognizing the fact that county workers represented by ShOA have been working without a contract since December 31, 1997, a majority of the Nassau County Legislature voted Friday, March 9, not to ratify the Memorandum of Agreement of the Sheriff's Officers' Association, citing concerns about wage/step increases, sick and vacation leave caps, clothing allowances, union officer night differential and a Control Board clause which would void any new savings provisions included in the proposed contract, among other things.

Presiding Officer Jacobs is encouraging the County Executive and representatives for ShOA to sit down as soon as possible to work toward a resolution that is acceptable to all parties and present it to the Legislature for review.
