May 4, 2004 LEGISLATOR FORD UPDATES PROGRESS ON LONG BEACH BRIDGE Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford (R-Long Beach) recently voted to approve funding to continue the rehabilitation of the Long Beach Bridge. The physical condition of the two bridges that span Reynolds Channel have been slowly deteriorating over the years and are in need of repair according to the New York State Department of Transportation. "Both the northbound and southbound bridges are structurally sound. They pose no immediate danger to the public. This funding will allow repairs to the bridge to be made to ensure that it will remain sound long into the future," said Legislator Ford. The Long Beach Bridge, one of three crossings that connect the city to Long Island is an important evacuation route in case of an emergency. The project is receiving nearly $500,000 from the County. Recently, Legislator Ford visited the bridge to examine the work first hand. "I am very pleased with the progress being made. I have received commitments from the New York State Department of Transportation that the bridge will be completed by July 1, 2004," said Legislator Ford. The Long Beach Bridge is a vital link from the barrier island to the mainland. "With the warm summer months upon us, it is critical that the span is completed to make certain that traffic runs smoothly. I will continue to monitor the work on the bridge to ensure it is reopened in time for the summer. This work has been a terrible inconvenience to everyone who lives and travels to the area, but the work has been absolutely necessary and will be completed shortly, " added Legislator Ford. |
