Legislator Nicolello Supports Ban
on Cell Phone Use While Driving

County Legislator Richard J. Nicolello (R-New Hyde Park) voted in support of local legislation that would prohibit the handheld use of cell phones when driving.

"We learn from the very first time we begin to drive that a motorists' attention must be strictly on the road and his/her surroundings," said Legislator Nicolello. "This legislation will ensure that drivers give their full attention to their vehicle and not be distracted by trying to use a handheld cell phone when driving."

The legislation, which would take effect July 1, requires the following:
  • The handheld use of cell phones while driving is prohibited.
  • Emergency calls are exempted from the law.
  • There is $100 fine for violation of the law.
"This legislation recognizes the fact that safety must be our number one priority and this bill addresses a very important traffic safety issue," concluded Legislator Nicolello. The legislation awaits the County Executive's approval.
