Legislator Nicolello Passes Legislation
Expanding Senior Citizen Tax Exemption Program
County Legislator Richard J. Nicolello (R-New Hyde Park) has introduced and passed local legislation, authorized by State law, which expands the senior citizen real property tax exemption. The legislation, which was adopted unanimously, awaits the County Executive's signature.
"I am pleased to have co-sponsored and passed this important legislation to expand the senior citizen real property tax exemption to the furthest extent possible as authorized by State law. This legislation helps our older Americans who have helped build our communities remain in their homes," said Legislator Nicolello. The program is administered by the Nassau County Department of Assessment.
The proposed income limits and percentage exempt from taxation are as follows:
To be eligible to participate in the program one of the homeowners must be 65 years of age and meet the income limits prescribed by State law. The legislation provides that any income shall be offset by all medical and prescription drug expenses actually paid which were not reimbursed or paid for by insurance. The filing period for the exemption is September 1 through December 31.
Residents wishing to apply for this program should contact the Department of Assessment directly at 516-571-1500.
