GOP LEGISLATORS INTRODUCE LEGISLATION REQUIRING GREATER ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW OF LAND SALE PROPOSALS

(Mineola, NY) Legislator Edward Mangano (R-Bethpage) and Legislator Richard Nicolello (R-New Hyde Park) have introduced local legislation that would give authority to the Nassau County Planning Commission to indicate its approval or disapproval of proposals made by the County Executive to sell any County property before the matter comes before the Legislature for review. Currently there is no such requirement in law. Legislators Schmitt, Ciotti, Becker, Muscarella, Gonsalves, Pontillo and Dunne are co-sponsors of the legislation.

"We believe it is critical that the Planning Commission should have the ability to indicate their approval or disapproval of all proposed sales of County property before the matter is sent to the County Legislature for action," said Legislators Mangano and Nicolello. "It is the Planning Commission with its expert staff that is best suited to review any proposed sale of property and gauge all of the impacts associated with the sale e.g. environmental, planning etc. before it comes to the County Legislature for consideration. The Legislature deserves to fully receive their guidance."

The legislation is consistent with a recommendation made in the County's adopted Open Space Plan of March 2001 which calls for greater Planning Commission review and ultimately greater public input into the proposed sale of County property.

"Nassau County's limited supply of open space needs to be protected. By utilizing the expertise of the Planning Commission we are assuring greater environmental and planning review in the process before any proposed sale of an asset comes before the County Legislature," concluded Legislators Mangano and Nicolello.
