Jacobs Approves Bold Initiatives
Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) approved a number of bold initiatives at the recent legislative meeting. Some of the items were approved through committee, and will be on the next legislative calendar. Others were approved by the legislature and await the County Executive's signature to become law.
- The annual appropriation ordinance for the program entitled "2001 Stop DWI Program" was approved along with an amendment barring elected officials, any likeness of any elected official, or the name of any elected official from appearing on any educational or promotional materials funded by the 2001 Stop DWI Program and printed or produced after December 7, 2000.
- In a cost-saving measure, the legislature approved the consolidation of the Departments of Recreation and Parks, AND General Services into the Department of Recreation, Parks and Support Services. The Office of Cultural Development was also merged into this department and the Cultural Development Board was eliminated.
- A local law was approved which expands the scope of advertisement of notice of sale of tax liens by including publications with characteristics that would qualify them as newspapers in an effort to ensure all communities receive adequate notice regarding the sale of tax liens. These publications must include news articles, editorials or other topics regarded as current interest and must have been printed and distributed no less than one year prior to the designation as an "other publication."
- The legislature approved: A resolution authorizing the solicitation of bids for the installation of new fences of various types and ballfield backstops and renovation of others at: Hempstead Harbor Beach; Eisenhower, Cantiague, Christopher Morley, Cedarmere, Tackapusha and Wantagh parks. A resolution soliciting bids for a contract to reconstruct the roof of the Holocaust Museum at the Welwyn Preserve in Glen Cove. An additional expenditure to finance improvements at various parks including: Roosevelt Park and Milburn Creek Park;Bay Park; Hempstead Harbor; Cantiague Park; Whitney Pond Park; Nassau Beach; Cedar Creek Park; Chelsea Center; Leeds Pond Preserve; and Hempstead Harbor Aerodrome.
