Jacobs Announces Annual Long Island Marathon
Come Join the Excitement on May 1st

Mineola, NY -Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury), Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi and the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums are proud to announce that the 33 rd Annual Long Island Marathon and Half Marathon will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Eisenhower Park.

“This race is considered “runner-friendly” because it allows the runners to decide after they start, which race they wish to finish,” said Legislator Mejias. “Whichever race you choose is completely dependent upon how you feel that day. Runners actually have a good first portion of the course to decide which race they ultimately want to complete.”

These marathons attract nearly 6,000 athletes each year and are considered the most “runner friendly” races. The course features ever-changing scenery, unlimited spectator-friendly viewing areas and musical entertainment along the way. Runners will see many prominent Nassau County properties including EAB Plaza, the Nassau Veterans memorial Coliseum, Nassau Community College, and the Omni Building. The course also tours Nassau County’s Museum row and offers runners the chance to run on the track at Mitchel Athletic complex on the very same track that Michael Johnson set a world record during the 1998 Goodwill games.

The latest addition to the marathon is the Nassau County Challenge, which encourages Nassau County employees to take part in the marathon and offers a variety of benefits. First time runners can take advantage of the “team in training” running program offered by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As part of the program, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will have expert running coaches train beginners on how to prepare for a marathon or half marathon and will hold special training events. “team in training” offers an amazing opportunity to get in running condition and support the fight against leukemia and lymphoma.

Regular registration is $40 for entries received by April 10, 2005. Late registration will be $50 and must be made in person at the Expo on April 29 & 30, 2005. (Only cash or money order will be accepted for late registration.)

The Long Island Marathon and Half Marathon will be held at the Butler Building at Mitchel Athletic Complex on April 29 th and 30 th. Applications can be obtained by sending a self addressed, stamped envelope to L.I. Marathon, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, NY 11554, by calling 516-572-0248, or by visiting the website at www.thelimarathon.com.
