October 03, 2003 Abrahams speaks to Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. - Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) recently returned from a trip to the nation's capitol where he was an invited guest speaker at the Congressional Black Caucus convention. "It was a tremendous honor for me to be asked to speak at the Congressional Black Caucus convention," said Abrahams. "It is a unique opportunity to meet with lawmakers from all over this country, to hear their views, and to share my concerns." Legislator Abrahams was part of a panel discussion on affirmative action and Nassau County's role in this, and other issues. He also spoke about the County's Minority Ownership Business Legislation, a law passed in 2002 requiring contractors wishing to do business with the county to use their "best efforts" to use minority and women-owned businesses for at least 15 percent of the contracted amount. "It is my belief that legislation like this helps to make every member of a community feel included in the governmental contract process," Abrahams said. While at the convention, Abrahams also met with his mentor, former Queens Rep. Floyd Flake. Abrahams had once served as the Congressman's legislative assistant. |
