September 16, 2004 Legislator Ford Continues Efforts to Restore Long Beach Bus Funding Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford (R-Long Beach) has been working to restore the County's funding for the N69 bus route that travels between Point Lookout and the City of Long Beach. In the past Nassau County has contributed a $60,000 subsidy to fund the route, which provides a vital link from Point Lookout through Lido Beach to downtown Long Beach, and the Long Beach train station. After hearing that the bus service would be dropped due to lack of county funding, Legislator Ford investigated the issue and found a miscommunication between the municipalities. All that remains is ensuring that legal requirements are met, so that both sides know their legal responsibilities. Legislator Ford is confident that these issues will be resolved in the coming weeks. "Now that we have identified the problem that existed in the past, we can take actions to ensure that this situation never happens again," said Legislator Ford. The City of Long Beach, in response to the growing situation had tentatively scheduled a public hearing for September 21st. Due in part to changes in the current situation and the efforts of Legislator Ford to restore the funding this meeting has been cancelled. "I am grateful to Legislator Ford for bridging the gap between the City of Long Beach and the County of Nassau, with this situation resolved the City of Long Beach can continue to provide this important service," said City Council President Jimmy Hennessy. Legislator Ford added, "The cooperation of the City of Long Beach and Nassau County is a prime example of good government at work, and hopefully all this work will translate into the N69 bus route operating for years to come." |
