GOP COUNTY LEGISLATORS FORGE FISCAL PLAN THAT REDUCES DEFICIT BY $108 MILLION OVER TWO YEARS
Spending Cuts - Employee Reduction - Efficiencies Achieved

Keeping to their commitment to cut government spending, Republican County Legislators working with Democratic County Legislators forged a bipartisan agreement that cuts spending, provides incentives to reduce the number of county employees and achieves various management efficiencies.

"Many of the proposals that the Republican delegation made in March with respect to putting the County in good fiscal health were contained in the final agreement," said Minority Leader Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa). "I am pleased that we have been able to produce an agreement that reduces the County's deficit by $108 million over the next two years."

Actions taken include:
    Spending Cuts
  • A hiring freeze for all County employees
  • A wage freeze for all non-union employees
    Employee Reduction
  • A severance package and early retirement program to be offered to cut the number of County employees with an agreement to achieve targeted reductions in non-union personnel
    Personal Service Contracts Cut
  • A $1.1 million cut in County Executive spending on personal service contracts for fiscal year 2000 and 2001
    Efficiencies Achieved
  • Modified staffing and civilianization in the Police Department
  • Overtime controls and improvements in the Correctional Center
  • Streamlining and consolidation of the Office of Cultural Development
"Much hard work was put in to achieve this agreement. Much more will need to be done for the 2001, 2002 and 2003 budgets," concluded Legislator Schmitt.
