GOP COUNTY LEGISLATORS CALL FOR STATE
OVERSIGHT WITH TEETH
In a letter to Frank Zarb, Governor Pataki's appointee to examine Nassau County finances, the Republican members of the Nassau County Legislature are calling upon the State to impose outside oversight to bring Nassau's fiscal crisis to a close. Republicans have called for substantial spending cuts to address the fiscal problems. The letter, signed by all nine Republican members of the Legislature, reads as follows: "The Republican caucus has put forward a fiscal recovery plan which restores financial integrity to Nassau County through a program of substantial spending cuts and modest revenue enhancements. Regrettably, as a minority on the Nassau County Legislature, we have neither the legal authority nor ability to enact this fiscal recovery program independently. All of our entreaties and appeals to those who have the authority to enact a fiscal recovery plan have been met with inaction. Therefore, the Republican caucus of the Nassau County Legislature believes that in the best interests of the taxpayers of Nassau County, outside oversight, with the teeth necessary to make substantial cuts in spending, must be imposed by New York State. This will bring Nassau's fiscal crisis to closure and restore County government to a financial footing that will best serve County residents and restore confidence in Nassau's fiscal integrity." |
