Legislator Nicolello: Preventing Mosquito Breeding Sites
Important to Fighting West Nile Virus

County Legislator Richard J. Nicolello (R-New Hyde Park) is reminding residents that we all have an important role to play to help prevent mosquito infestation on our home properties in the fight against the West Nile Virus.

"Residents have played a major role in preventing mosquito breeding sites and are to be congratulated for their vigilance in the fight against West Nile Virus," said Legislator Becker. "Again I remind residents of the following recommendations to help prevent breeding sites around our homes".
  • Empty standing water in old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys or any other container that may catch and keep water.
  • Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, potted plant dishes and water cans at least once a week, if not more often.
  • Completely drain swimming pools or keep them properly maintained and circulating; empty any water that may accumulate on swimming pool covers.
  • Clean and unclog rain gutters which are prime breeding areas for mosquitoes.
  • Make sure window and door screens are installed, tight and in good repair.
  • Replace outdoor lights with yellow "bug" lights.
"One of the best ways to eliminate mosquitoes is to eliminate breeding sites. I commend our residents for their efforts and ask for their continued assistance in this important public health matter," concluded Legislator Nicolello.
