May 20, 2003 Boating Safety Information provided by Legislator Nicolello The waters surrounding Nassau County and Long Island are wonderful place to spend the hot summer months. There are however many dangers that exist while operating a watercraft. "Boating is a wonderful recreational activity that can be very dangerous if not practiced correctly," said Legislator Richard J. Nicolello (R-New Hyde Park). The New York State Parks Department website lists a number of boater safety classes that will be conducted in Nassau during the summer. Classes for both adults and children are available at sites throughout Nassau County. "Boating safety classes will help teach novice boaters how to operate a vehicle correctly and safely this summer. Many laws that apply while driving your car carry over to your watercraft, so people new to boating need to become aware of the rules of the water," added Legislator Nicolello. Nassau County's waterways will once again be protected this summer by the Nassau County Police Department and the United States Coast Guard. The men and women of these departments will be on the lookout for underage operators and those who are boating while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. "In response to recent boating tragedies around Long Island, all boaters should become reacquainted with the rules of the sea to better protect themselves and their families from possible problems while out on the water," said Legislator Nicolello. The listing of boater safety classes can be found on the New York State Parks Department website, www.nysparks.com/boats.
