August 2, 2002 REPUBLICAN LEGISLATORS PRESENT OPEN SPACE FUND BILL Legislator Norma L. Gonsalves (R-East Meadow) has introduced a bill co-sponsored by the Republican delegation to create an open space fund for Nassau County. The fund is going to be used to purchase plots of land in Nassau County that can be used for recreational, cultural, archeological, or historical purposes. The pool will be created through the sale of properties currently owned by Nassau County. "Through this legislation we hope to preserve areas that the communities of Nassau can enjoy and be proud of," said Legislator Gonsalves about the fund. Through this bill, the county will contribute 3% of the net proceeds of sales of developed properties owned by the Nassau County government. A full 100% of the net proceeds of undeveloped pieces of land will be given to the fund. The Nassau County Planning Commission and the Open Space and Parks Advisory Committee will review possible sites. These groups will examine proposed properties and present their recommendations to the Nassau County Legislature. "This legislation is a terrific idea that will make Nassau a more appealing place to live, work, and play. I am very happy to be a part of a bill that will allow us to pass on a greener and more beautiful county to our children," added Legislator Gonsalves. |
