LEGISLATOR GONSALVES PROPOSES ELIMINATING SALES TAX ON OLD GLORY

The Nassau County Republican Legislators will be co-sponsoring a bill to eliminate the 4.5% Nassau County sales tax associated with the purchase of American flags. This bill will be presented during an upcoming legislative meeting. "It is the feeling of the Republican delegates that Nassau County should not benefit financially from a resident's patriotism," said Legislator Norma L. Gonsalves (R-East Meadow). New York State has approved legislation waiving the 4% state sales tax associated with the sale of American flags.

"The fourth of July is a time in which all Americans reflect on what this nation means to them. By purchasing the ultimate symbol of freedom and democracy, the American flag they show loyalty and support for the United States. After the tragedies that rocked our nation on September 11th, and the current struggle to bring the suspects to justice, it is that much more important that we show unwavering support for our nation's heroes," added Legislator Gonsalves. Ms. Carole McElwee of Massapequa says about the county tax, "Nassau County is long overdue in rescinding the sales tax on the flag, the should follow the example set by the state government.
