LEGISLATOR GONSALVES OFFERS HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

"Halloween is a favorite holiday of children, but they're thinking about costumes and candy and fun with their friends. Unfortunately, safety may be the last thing on their minds, so parents and motorists need to be especially alert," said County Legislator Norma Gonsalves (R-East Meadow). "I am pleased to offer to residents, free of charge, a list of safety tips compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)".

NHTSA recommends the following:
    Costume Safety:
  • No masks or hoods that obscure vision.
  • No "costume" shoes that make walking difficult
  • Make sure costumes do not impede walking (or driving) ability.
  • Add reflective tape to back, chest, arms and legs.
    Pedestrian Safety:
  • Obey all traffic rules.
  • Walk - never run - from house to house or across the road.
  • Whenever possible, cross streets at intersections or in crosswalks.
  • Walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or walk on the left side of the street facing traffic if no sidewalk is available.
  • Carry a flashlight.
