March 6, 2000 LEGISLATOR DUNNE: HOME IMPROVEMENT CONTRACTORS MUST BE LICENSED - HELPFUL BROCHURE AVAILABLE
With the warm weather of Spring approaching homeowners may be making plans to undertake construction projects on their home utilizing outside contractors. Nassau County Law requires that home improvement contractors must be licensed. "I urge residents before they commence with a home improvement to receive a copy of a helpful brochure developed by the Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs entitled, Consumer Checklist for Home Improvements and Repairs," said Legislator Dunne (R-Levittown). "This brochure provides a considerable amount of information on how to avoid problems before they occur." The Department of Consumer Affairs warns that residents should deal only with a licensed contractor. An unlicensed contractor may not have liability insurance and their business practices may be questionable. If you incur a problem with a licensed contractor, the Department of Consumer Affairs will mediate the dispute on your behalf. In some cases, you may be entitled to compensation under Nassau County's Restitution Fund. "Our homes are the single largest investment our residents make," said Legislator Dunne. "I urge residents to please take the time to protect themselves against those who would take advantage of them and receive a copy of this brochure before undertaking an improvement." Residents can obtain a copy of the brochure by calling Legislator Dunne's office at 571-6215. |
