May 29, 2000 LEGISLATOR DUNNE VOTES TO INCREASE PENALTIES TO PROTECT CONSUMERS
Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr. (R-Levittown) voted at a recent meeting of the Nassau County Legislature to increase penalties on business owners that use deceptive practices against consumers. "Unfortunately, a business owner who engages in deceptive practices against consumers may not be discouraged to end such measures as penalties have not been increased in some time," said Legislator Dunne. "This legislation puts more bite in the penalties and will act to deter those who would try to take advantage of consumers." Under the legislation penalties increase from a maximum fine of $1000 to $5000. The legislation received the support of the Nassau County District Attorney and the Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs. "I am pleased to have been able to support this legislation. It protects consumers and honest business owners who are trying to make a living," concluded Legislator Dunne. |
