Jacobs Passes Human Rights Legislation
New Law Was One of Democrats' Priorities in First Year as Majority

Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) and her Democratic majority made good on a 1999 campaign promise to pass a law that expands the protections proscribed under the County's current Human Rights legislation.

The legislation, which was introduced by Legislator Jacobs and her caucus, will extend the scope of the Nassau County Human Rights Commission and Open Housing law to include prohibitions against discrimination based on gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, source of income, religion and ethnicity. Prior to the unanimous vote, county legislation only contained language that prohibited discrimination based on race, creed, color and national origin.

"We have successfully brought a large part of our constituency under the County's umbrella of protection against discrimination," said Jacobs in a joint statement by the Democratic majority. "This legislation dictates loud and clear that Nassau County will not tolerate discrimination of any sort."
