February 10, 2004 Jacobs & Planning Committee hear presentation on L.I.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Study Mineola, NY-The New York State Department of Transportation, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council and their consultant, the RBA Group, made a presentation before the Nassau County Legislature's Planning, Development and Environment Committee on Monday, Feb, 9th to discuss the Long Island Non-Motorized Transportation Study. Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) serves as a member of the Planning, Development & Environment Committee. The Non-Motorized Study focuses on potential bicycle and pedestrian projects for the county. The final project will be a master plan for non-motorized facilities on Long Island, one that complements the existing network and connects to existing facilities and major destinations both locally and regionally. "The information presented was extremely useful and interesting," said Legislator Jacobs. "Projects that focus on alternative, non-polluting modes of transportation like bikes and walking will help us to develop a healthier and better quality of life for all Nassau County residents in the future." According to State DOT Regional Director Subi Chakraborti, "Pedestrians and bicyclists of all ages are important users of the transportation system. We should plan appropriate projects to accommodate their needs, and we must partner with local governments to extend walkways and bikeways into communities and to also share maintenance responsibilities so that the safest and most effective regional system is provided for bicyclists and pedestrians." The presentation included a description of existing and planned non-motorized facilities in Nassau and Suffolk counties, recommendations and identification of 100 potential projects.
