Jacobs approves tax savings for volunteer firefighters and ambulance service providers
Also approves first step towards acquiring 7.2 acres in for open space off of 135 Exp

Nassau County Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) and members of the Democratic Majority today approved a law giving a partial real estate tax savings to members of volunteer fire companies, fire departments and volunteer ambulance services who have served in good standing for over five years.

“In Nassau County emergency services are performed by volunteers who daily risk their lives in order to protect our safety and well being,” said Legislator Jacobs. “We are proud to provide this partial tax exemption to our selfless volunteers.”

According to Legislator Jacobs, the amount of the tax exemption will now be up to 10 % of the assessed value of the property owned by an enrolled member of a volunteer fire department or fire company. The applicant must reside in the city, town or village, which is served by the fire department, and the applicant must occupy the property. Applicants who qualify would file with the County Tax Assessor’s Office.

The legislation is scheduled to go before the full legislature on Feb. 16 and is expected to receive bi-partisan support.
