Jacobs captures 68% of vote in Legislative race

Mineola, NY - With a margin of victory that illustrates her broad base of support and popularity, Nassau County's Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) was reelected to her fifth legislative term on Tuesday, November 4, to represent the 16th legislative district.

"I am deeply honored and humbled by the ongoing support of my constituents. Their trust in me and my ability to help Nassau County turn the corner toward financial stability is vitally important to my individual goals and the greater goals of the administration and Democratic majority. I am confident that we will continue to make strides toward fiscal solvency and that residents will again be proud to be a part of this great county," said Presiding Officer Jacobs.

Legislator Jacobs, who has served as Presiding Officer for the past four years, topped her opponent, Republican Patricia Doyle, by more than 2-1, earning 9,550 votes to her opponent's 4,464. Democrats continue to hold a one vote edge in the legislature.

As Democrats gathered at the Garden City Hotel to celebrate their victory, County Executive Thomas Suozzi praised Presiding Officer Jacobs for her work, which has helped move the county forward. He added that Legislator Jacobs will continue in her capacity as Presiding Officer for the next two years.

This past year, legislative districts were redrawn, moving Presiding Officer Jacobs' district farther north into the heavily Republican areas of Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay Cove, East Norwich, and Cove Neck and eliminating most of Bethpage and part of Jericho.

However, Presiding Officer Jacobs still posted a decided victory. "I believe the numbers illustrate a clear mandate from the people that they like what we have been doing and that they want us to continue. They understand the necessity of doing what needed to be done to get the county back on the right track. Nassau County residents can again hold their heads up high. I will continue to ensure we never take a step back to the way things were. We have come too far," said Legislator Jacobs.

The win gives the Democrats a 10-9 majority over the Republicans and promises to help County Executive Suozzi continue his goal of restoring fiscal recovery to Nassau County.
