December 28, 2000 High Marks As Majority Wraps Up First Year
Democratic legislators reflected on the successes in their first year as the majority in the Nassau County Legislature during a press conference today by outlining their accomplishments on legislative, budgetary and procedural issues that have been the focus of their efforts. In their "Nassau County Legislature 2000 Report Card," Democratic legislators pointed to achievements that include undertaking a total reassessment of Nassau County's properties to the recently adopted Human Rights legislation which has received broad-based praise. In addition, they have implemented programs providing property tax relief to seniors, the disabled and parents who have lost children in war, and have created an advisory panel to study duplicative services among different levels of government. The majority's demand for a balanced and real fiscal 2001 budget and financial plan for the future received high marks, and their efforts in the early months of their tenure to eliminate unjustifiable perks to county employees were touted for making good on their promise that it would no longer be "business as usual" in Nassau County. Raising the bar even further, the Democratic majority changed the way county government operates by opening committee and legislative meetings to the public and providing ample opportunity for public comment. "We are extremely proud of the strides we have made during our first year as the majority. Many of the goals we set out at the beginning of the year have been accomplished, but this is just the beginning. There is still much to do. We are confident that the next year will bring a continued focus on improving the way business is conducted while we continue to work to implement initiatives that will lead the county into the future," said the Legislature's Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury). |
