July 31, 2000 BECKER LEGISLATION REQUIRING MOSQUITO
PESTICIDE SPRAYING NOTIFICATION PASSES Nassau County Legislator Francis X. Becker's (R-Lynbrook) legislation requiring the Nassau County Department of Health to give 24-hour notice prior to the aerial and/or ground spraying of pesticide was passed unanimously. The legislation requires that the public be informed as to what pesticide is being utilized, the hours of the spraying and the location of the spraying. "We recognize that as a last resort the Departments of Health and Public Works may utilize ground and/or aerial spraying of pesticides to control the mosquito that has been associated with carrying the West Nile Virus. This legislation gives residents the opportunity to take the steps necessary to avoid accidental exposure to the spraying of the pesticide," said Legislator Becker. Ground spraying has already occurred in Suffolk County and New York City. The legislation awaits the County Executive's signature. If residents have any questions about mosquitoes, have any mosquito complaints or have observed breeding areas, they may call the Nassau County Department of Health at 571-8707 weekdays from 9AM to 4:45 PM.
