March 27, 2002 Legislator Becker Jr. Encourages Volunteer Assistance For Our Veterans County Legislator Francis X. Becker Jr. (R-Lynbrook) announced today that the Nassau County Veteran's Service Agency is looking for volunteers to drive our war veterans to the VA Medical Center in Northport and to the Plainview Clinic and then back to their homes. "This service is a vital part of our county's dedication to the veterans of our nation," said Legislator Becker Jr.. "They served us during our country's time of need and it is our responsibility to help those who need assistance getting to and from their scheduled doctor's appointments." This transportation program has been supporting the veterans of Long Island for the past nine years. Using Nassau County's surplus vehicles, the drivers have been a crucial link in the aid given to many of our ill and disabled veterans. "Volunteering as a driver is a simple yet very effective way to pay thanks to these men and women. Many of the veterans cannot get to and from their doctors and that's why the volunteer driving corps is so critical," added Legislator Becker Jr.. To become a volunteer driver, one must have a valid New York State driver's license, and all transports are covered under Nassau County's insurance. Individuals interested in volunteering their time and services to the Volunteer Transportation Program are urged to call 516-572-8456. |
