LEGISLATOR BECKER SUPPORTS PROGRAM TO PREVENT SMOKING
In a continuing effort to prevent children from smoking, County Legislator Frances Becker (R-Lynbrook) voted to accept funding from the State of New York to continue the County's Tobacco Enforcement Program. "We must take every step possible to prevent our children from smoking," said Legislator Becker. "I am pleased to support a program such as this which takes advantage of State funding to help ensure that store owners do not sell cigarettes to our children." The program utilizes sting operations and compliance checks on the licensed and unlicensed sale of tobacco products to persons less than 18 years of age. The program is consistent with other efforts to reduce the use of tobacco products by children. The Nassau County Legislature in December 1999 passed landmark legislation which restricts children's access to tobacco products. |
