Legislator Dunne Supports Ban
on Cell Phone Use While Driving

County Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr. (R-Levittown) voted in support of local legislation that would prohibit the handheld use of cell phones when driving.

"We learn from the very first time we begin to drive that a motorists' attention must be strictly on the road and his/her surroundings," said Legislator Dunne. "This legislation will ensure that drivers give their full attention to their vehicle and not be distracted by trying to use a handheld cell phone when driving."

The legislation, which would take effect July 1, requires the following:
  • The handheld use of cell phones while driving is prohibited.
  • Emergency calls are exempted from the law.
  • There is $100 fine for violation of the law.
"This legislation recognizes the fact that safety must be our number one priority and this bill addresses a very important traffic safety issue," concluded Legislator Dunne. The legislation awaits the County Executive's approval.
