Help Support Honor Flight Long Island

 

On May 29, 2004, President Bush dedicated the World War II Memorial to honor "The Greatest Generation," 59 years after the end of WWII. Regrettably today, very few of these elderly veterans have the funds, knowledge or strength to complete a conventional trip to Washington D.C.

Honor Flight, a non profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices, flies our nation's heroes to Washington, DC to visit and reflect at their memorials. It is the intention of Honor Flight Long Island to honor as many of these selfless "ordinary people who saved the world" as we can by providing them a FREE trip to visit their memorial.

Honor Flight Long Island operates on donations from local and regional organizations and individuals from across Long Island. The flights, deluxe tour bus service, tee shirts, and meals, etc. are FREE to our veterans. Top priority is given to WWII Veterans and we will continue to do this so long as funds and volunteers are available.

Veterans must complete and submit their application to participate and are calledon a first-come-first-served basis.

Volunteer guardians, who pay their own way, personally escort the veterans on the aircraft, accompany them to the memorials throughout the day and during the return flight. (Medical attendants are NOT provided.)

9:30 am - Departure flight from MacArthur Airport

8:30 pm   Return flight from Baltimore Washington International Airport

ACTUAL FLIGHT TIMES AND ITINERARIES WILL VARY

The Honor Flight group will muster at Long Island MacArthur Airport two hours before departureto check in, issue boarding passes, name tags and souvenir T-shirts, meet and greet, take pictures, and get through security.

The flight is a quick hour to Baltimore Washington International Airport where a waiting motor coach will take the group on a 50-minute drive to Washington DC and the WWII Memorial.

Lunch is served on the bus and the Veterans get to watch a great video about how the WWII Memorial came to be.

The group will then spend about 2 hours at the WWII memorial, frequently among Honor Flight groups from other parts of the country.

The group then visits the Iwo Jima Memorial. Visits to Arlington National Cemetery, the Navy Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, or other area highpoints, can take place depending upon weather and time constraints.

The group will then stop for a buffet dinner on the way back to the airport to taketime to relax and enjoy our group before boarding the return flight home, which takes approximately an hour.
