The Roosevelt Empowerment Committee and Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) with Mark Stevens (De Ja 34& The Next Generation Project) have planned a weekend bursting with family-oriented activities for a third annual “Family Empowerment Day, 2009.”
On June 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Zion Cathedral Church of God in Christ, 312 Grand Ave., Freeport, the Committee and Bishop Frank O. White, the Cathedral’s Senior Pastor, have scheduled a community meeting with Stephen A. Smith, alum of Roosevelt High School and a former commentator with ESPN. Mr. Smith will lead a thought-provoking presentation and discussion entitled “Leaders: Taking the Journey From Boyhood to Manhood.” The special guest that evening will be NBA star Marquis Daniels of the Indiana Pacers. On June 6, at 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., in Roosevelt’s Centennial Park, families will have the opportunity to enjoy “Family Empowerment Day” that will feature a Family Fun Fest as well as “Palming the Ball” with Marquis Daniels of the Indiana Pacers. Local youth are urged to participate in a basketball clinic sponsored by Mr. Daniels. The “Feed the Children Organization” will be on hand to distribute non-perishable items.
To close this wonderful community event, at 4 p.m. there will be a mini concert headlined by Rap stars Bun B and Papoose and featuring DJ Kay Slay of radio station Hot 97 and music provided by Wayne Glover Productions. In addition, there will be live performances by local talent.
